Hang The DJ was started just 8 months ago by two 20 year old journalism students from Sheffield University, Alice Carder and Helen Barnett, who disillusioned with club land, decided to do a bit of clubbing D.I.Y Helen explains: ‘We were fed up of boring DJs who just played one predictable record after another and seemed to be idolised for being lazy. We wanted to create something that was more focused on the party and the people.’
And hence Hang The DJ was born, the name saying it all.
The girls really landed on their feet when they hooked up with Hang The DJ resident and renowned party starter DJ Ricky Chopra. Ricky has been DJing in the city for 15 years, including a 10 year residency at Gatecrasher, and plays a live laptop set switching from Justice to James Brown and back again with his unique electro mini mixes, rivaled only by Soulwax and ilk.
Wherever they go the Hang The DJ team transform the venue into a wonderland, using boudoir-esque décor, live visual art installations, fire breathers, dancers and other performers. The night is definitely geared towards the crowd with face painting, free gifts and dressing up a common feature.
'We love good music, good atmosphere and bringing our friends together. Ultimately we just want to have a party!' Alice Said'
